Amazon Must Fast-Forward Video Plans – WSJ.com – “How important is it for Amazon to remain strong in video? After all, it now sells everything from refrigerators to paper towels as well as books. Media accounted for only 45% of net sales for the first nine months of 2010, down from 54% a year earlier. Morgan Stanley analyst Scott Devitt projects it will drop to 31% by 2012, even as total sales rises to $57 billion from an estimated $34.3 billion in 2010. Mr. Devitt estimates books account for about half of the media revenue, with the rest coming from music, video, videogames and software.”

Facebook Sets Stage for IPO Next Year – WSJ.com – “Facebook Inc., one of the world’s hottest technology companies, gave the clearest sign yet that it is preparing to take itself public sometime next year, as it revealed new details in a 100-page document sent to a select group of potential investors.<br />

“Facebook, of Palo Alto, Calif., said it plans to increase its number of shareholders above 500 this year, according to the private-placement document, forcing the social-networking company to begin disclosing reams of financial information or go public by April 2012.”

NBC Premieres New TV Show on the iPad [EXCLUSIVE] – “NBC’s new show The Cape is getting its premiere today, but you can only watch it if you have an iPad. The sneak peek was made possible via a relationship with DC Comics, which will offer viewers the chance to view the one-hour pilot episode from January 5 to 8 via DC’s free iPad app. The show’s television premiere is set for January 9. Though NBC is partnering with DC, the show isn’t based on a DC Comics character, but is instead inspired by it.”

Our view on ‘net neutrality’: On the Internet, the pipes shouldn’t control the content – USATODAY.com – “Broadband companies argue that they need financial incentives to lay the cables and build the networks that will be necessary to handle surging amounts of digital traffic. They are right. And for that reason, they should charge heavy consumers of bandwidth more than they do modest users.

“Their argument that increased traffic should give them the right to favor certain content is absurd. It is a bit like an electric utility saying that, to cope with surging demand for power, it should be allowed to require customers to use only appliances that it licenses.

“As for members of Congress, taking up the broadband companies’ cause might be a good way to raise money. But, ultimately, it is a bad way to foster innovation and economic growth.”
