Meet Huck!

A new member of the Berens family has arrived!

We have been dogless for about a year and a half. I wrote about the death of Ace, one of our corgis, here. His corgi cousin Jodie followed him just a few weeks later. We still miss them.

Good news! On Friday, we brought Huckleberry “Huck” Berens home.

Huck is a nine-week-old Bernese Mountain Dog. We adopted him from Black Forest Bernese across the river from us in Oregon City. If you’re thinking about a Berner, I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Here are La Profesora and Huck the first time they met.

And here is Huck with me a little later:

Our son William and his girlfriend, Samantha, came to visit. Here are William and Huck:

The next day, Huck met La Profesora’s dad, Steve.

Huck has attempted to turn me into a Vincent van Gogh lookalike several times. Here is documentary evidence:

Chilling after a play sesh:

Huck was 17 pounds when we met him Friday, and he seemed to get bigger overnight. He’ll top out between 100 and 110 pounds over the next year, so I’m enjoying the ability to carry him around while I can.

Saturday morning, we took him on his first outing to our local Farmers Market, where we carried him around. He was quite the celebrity! (A few women gasped when they saw him.)

Huck is a confident, calm, and cheerful pup. We’re starting the house training, commands, and the like. I took a few days vacation to get us all acclimated to each other.

It’s already just so nice to have a dog in the house again.
